My very dear husband has been forewarned that if our house does not sell by the time our contract runs up in April, my Compulsive Transplanting disorder will be kicking into high gear. He's pretty used to coming home and discovering mass upheaval new projects, but I wanted to give him plenty of advance notice this time. I have a laundry list a mile longer than any paper I can find in the house.
While I've been mentally painting faux backsplashes, I've been staring out into the bleak winter garden. Dangerous, I know. Which leads to pinning more of these garden pictures at Pinterest.
Now if I looked out my window and saw one of these gardens, I'd be fairly confident I'd died and arrived at my heavenly home. :)
Cause this is what I see looking out the window of my earthly home!
I was surprised to see a common theme while looking at my Pinterest garden board. Several of the gardens that have caught my eye enough to be pinned have a formal element to them - specifically, a straight pathway leading to a focal point. Shocker! I would have denied it if the pinned evidence wasn't right in front of me.
I do love the "wildness" of cottage gardens,
but I have enough of an active left brain to like a tidy straight line.
So...of course that means my active right brain is coming up with all kinds of plans to rearrange.
Compulsive Transplanting Disorder strikes again!
(Check out my Welcome to Pinterest post if the Pinterest garden images are enough to make your mouth water and contemplate coming over to the Pinterest dark side...@PlantPostings...)

Hanni, thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment! You asked about using my post for a Before and After. Please feel free to use anything, as long as you link it back to me. And thank you for the compliment. I love that you have diagnosed and named a condition I also suffer from - Compulsive Transplanting Disorder. I didn't mention it, but in the post you commented on, almost every plant in the border was moved from somewhere else, and I currently have a list of several more to be moved in there, and a few to be moved out too!
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome Lyn! Glad I'm not the only one who suffers from it...LOL...I will send you an email about the Before and After.
DeleteI blame and thank you for my Pinterest addiction ;)
ReplyDeleteI like the pics of gardens that lead to a little shed. One day I'll actually be able to plant things in the ground instead of pots! Hope your house selling goes well so you can move to a fab blank canvas!
Thank you...I think? Haha! :)
DeleteThanks Hanni,
ReplyDeleteI didn't know what pininterest was but now I am tempted to turn to the dark side too. But I shouldn't even be on blog reading right now - I have classes to plan and housework to do and... maybe I'll just take another look.
It can be a time waster if you let it...just like anything else, but I find it's a great source of inspiration.
DeleteHanni,
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have it bad now! I can definitely relate.
I talk about my planting style as being semi-formal: Formal design using geometric shapes but with billowing plantings. That looks like what you are interested in as well :) I say, go for it! Try to ignore the small things there now and just think about what kind of redesign would make it what you want it to be. Staking out rope or laying down a hose helps me to visualize it.
Oh, and be sure to ask your husband to pretend to be a tree with his arms outstretched and your children to be shrubs. Then move them about until you like it. Gardening is definitely a family affair after all ;)
I can completely picture your family standing in your garden with arms waving. That's not a bad idea!
DeleteHe he...the Pinterest dark side. That's not such a terrible thing, is it? ;-) I think we have exactly the same garden styles and similar practices (good intentions, limited time and funds, inertia issues). Great post! See you on Pinterest! Gee thanks.
ReplyDeleteI hear you on the limited time and funds, for sure. I try my best to think of it as an additional challenge!
DeleteOh I swear I live vicariously through the gardens I come across on pinterest. I too think I would die if I woke to find anyone of those gorgeous gardens in my yard. By looking at my pins I think I have a thing for garden paths. Hope the move is going well, been thinking about you..xx
ReplyDeleteThanks Julia...your garden paths board spawns many daydreams over here. :) Isn't it surprising what you find catches your eye?
DeleteHi Hanni, I actually like your earthly garden a lot - love that curvy path. Beautiful evergreen (arborvitae?) and rose in there. I have not heard of pinterest but will have to check it out (sounds dangerous...)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I do love it the way it is too...I just always have to itch to change things. :) Certainly check Pinterest out!
DeleteHanni you have such lovely pictures to inspire you...
ReplyDeleteKudos to Pinterest!
DeleteI have totally gotten hooked on Pinterest as well lately! Such great inspiration - but now I have seen so many projects I want to do! So much to do, so little time..
ReplyDeleteI agree. But I do love having them all compiled in one place instead of scattered all throughout my brain. :)
DeleteYour garden is really pretty now. I would not change a thing. Too much work for such a short time. Just keep collecting pictures of what you like and you can make it a reality in your next home.
ReplyDeleteWellllll....you know, of course I had to pick the prettiest picture at the prettiest time of year! :) I'm not planning on changing it now; just getting ideas. If we end up NOT moving, then I probably will change it.
DeleteHanni, I loved loved all your pinned garden photos - they are all beautiful, but so is yours! Its come a long way since I first started reading your blog and it looks gorgeous! Love the colours.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, Pinterest!! I had to take a little break from it last week...it was becoming quite the addiction ;) I love the focal point style too...now, how to incorporate that into my own garden?!
ReplyDeleteGreat inspiration! There is something very striking about a straight line. Your eye zips down it.
