Hope Grows Day: August 2011

Happy Hope Grows Day!

Last month I was hoping to reap a harvest from the vegetable garden. I realized that I didn't plant nearly enough cucumbers or beans, and I have wayyyy too many peppers! The fourth year must be a charm with the peppers, because they have been one of my Nemesis Plants for the the past few years.

There are well over 5 pounds of peppers in my Harvest Home tally so far!

The sole remaining tomatoes after the deer attack have been barricaded with the rest of the chicken wire. I figure, if it's nearly impossible for ME to reach the tomatoes, it has to be nearly impossible for them!

In August, I'm hoping to see these morning glories go from this:

to this:

I'm so glad they aren't conquer the garden to the death invasive here. I do get volunteers each year, but not so many that I cannot easily yank them up if they show up where I don't want them.

I'm also looking forward to seeing the sedums start to turn color. These are passalongs, so I don't know what variety they are, but they are faithful and have interesting foliage all year long!

It's probably too much to hope for in August, but I'm looking forward to slightly cooler temps so that I can transplant and fix this barren looking  area! :) Maybe I should save that for September...

What are you hoping for from your garden in August?

  2. Cute pic! And nice job conquering your nemesis peppers. Maybe I can submit a seasonal Hope Grows--next year I hope to conquer my nemesis, the evil cilantro.

For August, I hope for POUNDS of tomatoes!

  6. Well done on the peppers! I would love to grow some, but they are very hard to grow successfully here in the PNW. It just doesn't get hot enough. I chuckled at your thumbs-down shadow.

  7. I hope your morning glories bloom for you too!

I have some nicotiana seedlings that are about 2 inches shorter than your m.g.'s. I think I have given up hope of them being 4 foot tall like they are supposed to be. OH, well. There is always next year :)

    Congrats on the peppers ;)

  10. Impressive peppers! This is my first year trying to grow them, and I have one lonely plant just starting to try and form a few tiny fruit. I think I am missing a trick or two!

  11. I wouldn't mind your pepper problem! Mine are always slow and produce pitifully! Glad you were able to save a few tomatoes!

  13. Well done with the peppers. Thinking of growing morning glory this coming summer at our place inspired by your pretty blooms. I am hoping for cauliflowers this month.

  14. You do need all that heat to grow peppers etc. Even with a greenhouse it's a long haul over here. It's just been too cold.
The colour of the Morning Glory is fabulous!

  16. Okay, okay, let's talk about the 4# of red peppers. What's your secret? I'm at my wit's end. Beautiful harvest, by the way!
