End of Month View: February 2011

I am SO thankful February is over. :) My garden starts to wake up in March. I can usually plant peas, and there are enough nice days that I can putter about and clean up a bit from the long winter. Right now, most everything is still covered in snow, but yesterday it rained. Rain! Not snow! That's a good sign.

Apparently this is the hip bird night club. See all the dance floor marks? (I have a birdfeeder right above this photo). It's always a surprise to wake up and see what has been going on at night.

And look what I found poking up out of the ground! Woo hoo! I found a whole bunch of yellow crocus, and can't wait to see their sunshine. They have bloomed on the exact same day - March 18 - for the past two years. I also found some mystery bulbs. Every year I manage to plant bulbs and forget to label them!

And if you squint very carefully, you can see some tiny alyssum sprouts in one of my wintersowing containers. Alyssum is always the first to sprout for me...I don't know if the alyssum I planted last year will re-seed for me or not, so I have some extras just in case.

I've been sitting at my dining room table planning in my head all the plants I'd like to move in this main area. I have a red-twigged dogwood I think I will move back here, and I do think I'll add some kind of evergreen. I'm still stumped on what to do in the Corner of Despair. (It's the corner that is directly right of the white birdhouse). Since it's between two windows, I don't want anything that will grow too tall. Right now I'm thinking of a bridal veil spirea or maybe a burning bush? Last season the Corner of Despair was the final resting place for all my weeds!

Thank you again to the Patient Gardener for hosting the End of the Month View!

  1. I always shy away from those end of the month winter displays because we always have full snow cover. I am so hoping the end of March brings a little green. As pretty as the snow is, green is really looking good right about now.

  2. And so your spring will be ever more joyful for the long winter that preceded it! I hope your snow melts soon and all those little buds can start emerging!

  4. @GWGT- haha! you're telling me! I can't wait for some green out there.

@debs- It *will* be joyful...that's one reason I'm thankful that we do have winter.

@Darla - thank you so much!

  5. Yes - mystery bulbs! Last year I planted all kinds of bulbs and didn't label any of them, thinking that by spring I'd welcome the surprise. Now that they're coming up, I'm thinking, "Why didn't I label these?!" But the surprise will still be nice when it comes. :)

Perhaps a little disco ball next to the bird feeder...?

  6. I like that you review your garden every month. That's a good habit. It won't be long before the crocus bloom and spring will have arrived for you.

  7. Once the Crocuses break through, the other new growth comes fast. Yippee! Enjoy!
